DEM: June 26 West Nile/EEE Status Update

DEM announces that test results from all 45 mosquito pools, or samples, from 28 traps set statewide during the week of June 15 are negative for both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. (More info)

DEM Announces Closure of Point Judith and Winnapaug Ponds to Shellfishing Beginning at Noon Today As a Result of Excessive Rainfall and Runoff

DEM announces that two coastal ponds in South County are closed to shellfish harvesting beginning at noon Thurday, July 2, until further notice. Closure areas include all of Point Judith Pond in South Kingstown and Winnapaug Pond in Charlestown. (More info)

DEM Announces Availability of Farm Viability Grant Funds to Enhance and Promote RI Specialty Crops

DEM announces that $80,000 in farm viability grant funds is available through DEM for grants to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops grown in Rhode Island. The funds are from the US Department of Agriculture's Specialty Crop Block Grant program. (More info)

DEM Accepting Grant Applications for Boat Pumpout Facilities until July 6

DEM announces that it is now accepting applications from qualified public and private marinas, yacht clubs, and municipalities to construct, replace, retrofit, and maintain marine pumpout boats and land-based pumpout facilities. (More info)

DEM Continues to Seek Energetic Families to Play the Great Outdoors Pursuit and Announces Upcoming Events

DEM continues its search for families to play the 2009 Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit, a contest that encourages Rhode Islanders to enjoy the recreational resources and outdoor activities our state parks have to offer — while moving toward a healthier lifestyle. (More info)

DEM: Campers and Other Vacationers Should Use Only Local Firewood to Prevent Import of Invasive Wood-Boring Insects

As campers and other vacationers prepare for their upcoming holidays, the Department of Environmental Management is urging them to refrain from transporting firewood to and from other areas, and to use, instead, only local firewood at their campsites and summer cottages. Tree-eating, non-native, insects can be transported in firewood, with the potential to cause damage costing millions of dollars in clean-up, eradication, and replanting efforts. (More info)
